Our First Wedding Anniversary

If you read my post from Monday called Forever Like That, then you know that Monday was our first wedding anniversary! I can’t believe how fast a year went by! I was pretty sentimental the entire weekend and just kept saying things like, “A year ago I was at my bridesmaid brunch!” or “A year ago we were at our rehearsal dinner!” or “A year ago I was waking up on our WEDDING DAY!”. I can’t help but be sentimental about it all! It was the best day of my life, which was thankfully followed by the best year of my life! I was so excited to celebrate that year with my husband.

We woke up Sunday morning and I went ahead and gave Matthew his gift before we went to church. The first anniversary is apparently the “paper anniversary”, so I stuck with that theme. A girl I went to college with has an etsy shop where she does calligraphy pieces, and I ordered these beautiful vows from her! I added in a wedding picture to the gift too, and I love how they look on our bedroom wall!

After church, we headed to Matthew’s parents house because I wanted his mom to take a picture of us with the framed wedding picture. I plan on putting the new picture in the frame as soon as I get it printed, and every year on our anniversary we will take a new picture holding the frame. (I got the idea from Pinterest- what did we do before Pinterest??)

Since there are so many projects we want to do around the house, we decided to save money and just do a one night staycation to celebrate our anniversary. Matthew has the best parents who spoil us rotten, and they gave us a gift card for our anniversary gift to Marriot hotels and booked us a room at the Gaylord Texan, which is about 15 minutes from our house. We are so blessed that the gift card covered almost all of it! We headed to the Gaylord Sunday afternoon. We had a beautiful room that overlooked the atrium. We spent the afternoon by the pool (yes, it’s warm enough in Texas to spend the afternoon by the pool!!) It was so relaxing!

After time by the pool (and maybe a few drinks), we headed back to the room and got ready for dinner. We enjoyed dinner at the Italian restaurant that is located on site. It was so delicious! We basically got a private room for dinner, and it was very romantic. We spent the evening talking about why we were thankful for marriage and each other. It was so perfect!

After dinner, we headed back to the pool but spent the evening in the hot tub. It was very relaxing! Then we headed back to the room. The next morning, we left around 9:00 and headed to our favorite breakfast spot- Old West Cafe in Euless. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast! We were so stuffed by the time we left. We spent the rest of the day working on a little remodel of the downstairs bath! (It was my anniversary gift! Of course I will write a blog all about it once we are finished!)

My handsome view at breakfast 😉

Matthew had made dinner reservations for our actual anniversary weeks before, but was keeping it a surprise. After working on the bathroom for awhile, we started getting ready and he told me we were going to the Old Warsaw Room in Dallas. I had never heard of it or been before, but then he told me he chose it because they had Beef Wellington.(Backstory: We had Beef Wellington on our honeymoon in Jamaica. It was the best meal we had ever had, and I had talked about it ever since!) I was so stoked. I couldn’t wait to eat it again! We arrived and apparently- we were the only people who had reservations that night. I get it- who goes to fancy dinners on Monday nights?- but it was still crazy weird to be the only people in a restaurant! The Beef Wellington was to die for though. It was a great choice by Matthew!

When we got back home, we pulled out the top tier of our wedding cake. Guys, I don’t know why this is a tradition. It looked weird and smelled weirder. (Confession: we threw it away and didn’t eat it. Woops!) Thankfully, our cake lady had made us a fresh replica. We each ate a slice and drank a glass of the almond champagne that we had at our wedding, all while watching our wedding video. It was the perfect night- reliving the best day, but also dreaming for the future together!

I am so thankful for this man that I get to call my husband. I know that we might not get to celebrate every anniversary this much, but it was so fun to celebrate the first one! Doing life with Matthew is everything I dreamed it would be- and more. Cheers to our first year of having a Kell of a Good Time! I can’t wait for many, many more! I love you!
